Check the alignment of the deadbolt against the strike on the jamb if the lock is difficult to turn when the door is closed or the door doesn t lock at all. Pull the spindle from the center of the latch if applicable. Once the door is open try to actuate the door latch with the handle. More force is needed to turn the knob and unstick the latch. Use the screwdriver to push the opposite side of the doorknob from the door and latch. If your home has a lot of interior doors that lock sooner or later you re bound to lose the key lock it inside the room or discover your toddler has locked himself in and cannot get out. Use a file to widen the hole on the strike or remove the strike with a screwdriver and reposition it on the jamb.
